After a tray-sledding accident led to a hospital stay, Eugenia reconsidered her pre-med path at Dartmouth. She moved to New York, joined Allure magazine, and took a millinery class at Parsons. In 1998, a bad haircut inspired her to create a feathered cloche—quickly noticed by local boutiques and Barneys New York. The Eugenia Kim brand was born.

As demand grew, Eugenia outgrew her East Village loft and opened her first boutique, where she designed hats by day and lived in a small back room by night.
